Ask NOW: Can drivers turn right on red arrow?

Dec. 20, 2011 | 4 comments

Is there a rumor you've heard you would like to track down? Is there something in the community that needs to get fixed? Mary Malahy answers some of the mysteries of life in the Elmbrook area.

Can drivers turn right on red arrows?

Issue: A reader wrote to me about the intersection of Capitol Drive and Barker Road. She wants to know if it is legal to turn right when there is a red turn arrow. She explained that she usually waits for it to turn green but frequently gets honked at while waiting.

Status: Town of Brookfield Police Capt. Tim Imler said it is legal to turn right when the arrow is red at that intersection. He has gotten a few calls about that intersection and thinks the arrow might confuse some people.

  1. Why would a red arrow confuse people when there is obviously no reason for any arrow of any color?

Take that stupid thing down and sell it for scrap metal. >:(
  2. Would someone care to explain the mesmerizing collage of lights facing the northbound traveler at the corner of Barker Rd. and Capital Dr.?

When the light marked 'right turn' is red, does the driver turning right remain stopped, or does she follow the 'Right Turn on Red Following a Full Stop' rule and proceed on after coming to a full stop? :o

That's somewhat confusing to visiting elves! :)
  3. In fact, some people are unaware of this, but in some parts (or most parts) of Illinois, it is in fact illegal to turn right on a red turn arrow.
  4. pat..., In fact, the great majority of people in Illinois are not aware of anything. What's more, most tend to cast many more votes post-mortem than they do in-vivo! :o
