First-place Brookfield Central couldn't take advantage of some great early defense and as a result was upset by Menomonee Falls, a team that is under .500 (4-5) in Greater Metro Conference play.
The loss cut the Lancers' (8-1, 13-3) lead to one game over Wauwatosa East (7-2, 12-4) and West Allis Central (7-2, 11-4) going into Tuesday's game at Marquette (3-6, 4-10) (see separate story).
Central led 12-7 after one quarter, but only led 23-21 at intermission.
"We had excellent defensive energy in the first quarter," Central coach Mark Adams said. "We forced them into nine turnovers, including seven in a row. But we didn't capitalize on them.
"We played at such a hurried pace offensively, we didn't convert. We could have been up by 12 and we weren't."
The Indians then came out and outscored the Lancers by 12 (19-7) in the third period and took a 40-30 lead into the final period.
"Our shot selection was questionable and that hasn't happened all year," Adams said. "Usually we snap out of it within a game after making adjustment offensively, but never got it back. We did a poor job of coaching."
North Carolina recruit JP Tokoto had 13 points and 11 assists, while Brandon Ramey led Falls scorers with 14 points and Zach Weyenburg had 11. The Indians played without their second-best player, C.J. Malone, who was sitting out his last game of suspension.
Riley LaChance and Seth Mortag led Central with 18 and 14 points, respectively.
"This is the most team-oriented that I have seen Tokoto play," Adams said. "He moved the ball around well and we weren't recovering."
