BOYS HOCKEY Stars' nine-game win streak comes to an end

Feb. 7, 2012 | 0 comments

A last minute rally fell short on Saturday at The Ponds of Brookfield and second-ranked Verona held off Brookfield, 7-6, to snap the Stars' nine-game winning streak in an exciting non-conference battle.

As a result, the Stars split their weekend action, having defeated Catholic Memorial/Pius XI in a Classic 8 conference game on Friday.

The Stars stayed in second at 5-1, one-half game behind Kettle Moraine (5-0) in conference play. Catholic Memorial/Pius XI fell to 2-2, 2-15.

In Friday's win, the Stars used a four-goal second period to coast to a 7-5 win over Catholic Memorial/Pius XI despite a late-run by the Crusaders, who made the score interesting.

Brandt Rogers scored twice, Drew Owen and Max Hoffman each had a goal and two assists, Carter Jenkins and Matt Fosdick each had a goal and an assist and P.J. Corbett added a goal. Assists went to Zak Pipers, Robbie Fosdick and Patrick O'Brien.

Owen scored 43 seconds into the game (Hoffman/Pipers), but Will Radke scored at 15:53 to tie the game.

Brookfield then added four goals in the second period by Rogers at 4:44; Hoffman at 5:55 (Robbie Fosdick); Corbett at 9:41 (O'Brien and Matt Fosdick) and Rogers again at 10:46 (Owen/Jenkins). Radke's second goal (Sam Chapin) came at 8:55.

Leading 5-2, the Stars saw the Crusaders score at 7:39 (Chapin/Matt McGilvray/Radke) before Jenkins (Hoffman/Owen) scored at 8:19 and Matt Fosdick at 11:49 for a 7-3 advantage.

Catholic Memorial/Pius XI closed out the scoring at 15:35 (Nick Stagl/Nate Gentile/JP Miller) and at 16:21 (by Gentile/Miller).

Verona (20-1-1) jumped out to a 4-0 lead on Senior Night on Saturday, before Matt Fosdick scored (O'Brien) at 8:23 to make it 4-1 after one period.

The Wildcats scored twice in the second period for a 6-1 lead, before Brookfield countered with two goals by Hoffman at 9:52 (Carlson) and 11:33 (power play/Rogers/Fosdick).

Trailing 6-3, O'Brien opened the third period with a goal at 7:45, but Verona countered at 9:36 for a 7-4 advantage.

A furious rally by the Stars fell short.

O'Brien scored on a power play (Corbett) at 14:19 and then Corbett had an unassisted score to close out the scoring at 14:36.
